The Hamilcast: A Hamilton Podcast

In this podcast about all things Hamilton, host Gillian Pensavalle speaks with guests, and sometimes co-host/all time husband Michael Paul Smith, about the innerworkings of the show, how it came together, what it takes to put on all around the world, finding Hamilton references in everyday life, and much more. The Hamilcast has played host to every member of the original creative team, aka "The Cabinet", including repeat visits from Hamilton creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Hamilcast features interviews with cast members from every Hamilton tour, Broadway, and UK company--crew members, musicians, creatives, and the hard working people behind-the-scenes that keep the production alive. Plus: historians, super fans, celebrity Hamilton enthusiasts, and group cast recordings! When I started this podcast in January of 2016, I could not have imagined the incredible community that has grown around the show and the amazing experiences that have come my way. Thank you to everyone who has listened, appeared on the show, contributed, or reached out in any way. This podcast is for you and I absolutely love making it. Patrick Vassel, Hamilton's Associate & Supervising Director, rounds out his episodes with details about those scary work sessions we've heard about from so many actors (finally), fills us in on The Character Constitution, and talks about the upcoming productions in Australia and Hamburg, Germany.

Jun 17, 2019

Patrick Vassel, Hamilton's Associate & Supervising Director, is back this week to talk moving from The Public to Broadway, the joy and misery of tech, and how The Cabinet (Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, Alex Lacamoire, and Andy Blankenbuehler) established and continue to keep an extraordinary amount of trust among eeryone working on the show. Oh! And PDV raps cut lyrics from two songs, with explicit permission from Lin-Manuel, who texted us during the recording.

Patrick Vassel, Hamilton's Associate & Supervising Director, stops by for an extremely deep dive into how Hamilton runs smoothly as it continues to expand all over the world. In his first episode PDV talks about how he landed this badass job, explains how he does it, and shows all the love for director Thomas Kail.

Hello! A message from the King! (Get it? Because Rory O'Malley has been in both The Book of Mormon *and* Hamilton). Join me as I hang out with the kind, funny, warm, and super talented Rory O'Malley! Rory talks about what it's like to be a brand new father, he tells me his Hamilton story and his experience playing King George III on Broadway and the first national tour, and we bond over podcasting. Plus, we talk The Book of Mormon including sage advice about King George III from Andrew Rannells, what KGIII and Elder McKinley have in common, and Rory does one hell of a Josh Gad impression.

Anthony's third episode opens with an emotional story involving Freestyle Love Supreme's own Arthur Lewis (Arthur the Geniuses), a significant loss, and how the crew grieved together live on stage during FLS' most recent run. After a pizza break, Anthony answers more questions from the Patreon Peeps including how his daughters reacted to seeing him at FLS (and how more and more kids are coming to the shows), how much he loves being in a classroom, and a new way to sing "Your Obedient Servant."

Anthony Veneziale (aka Two Touch) kicks off his second episode with his Hamilton experience, from Lin-Manuel Miranda calling him as Hercules Mulligan to seeing it in previews at The Public. We also have a therapy session about why freestyling seems so terrifying and why people (especially women) have been hardwired to think that way. Plus, Anthony explains how Freestyle Love Supreme stays positive in this political climate. And then Mike comes home and we order pizza! Yeah, there's a lot going on in this one.

Anthony Veneziale (Freestyle Love Supreme's Two Touch) is here and oh mannnnnn did we have one hell of a conversation. In his first episode Anthony talks about the FLS origin story (including freestyling with Tommy Kail on a road trip, getting Cool Points from Chris Jackson, and working on In The Heights), the brain science behind improvisation, and the importance of bringing women and people of color into the space he's created.

Wrapping up my hangout with Marc delaCruz we take questions from the Patreon Peeps, talk about the massive impact of Hamilton around the world, and the importance of telling your story.

Apr 15, 2019

In Marc’s second episode, Marc talks about how it still doesn’t feel real that he’s in Hamilton. He also tells me about the pressure and responsibility of playing Hamilton on Broadway and we have a long and meaningful conversation about the importance of representation. Marc opens up about growing up as an Asian-American and how the lack of representation played a large role in how he saw himself and others.

Apr 8, 2019

Marc de la Cruz recently made history as the first ever Asian American actor to play the role of Hamilton on Broadway. After falling in love with In the Heights and realizing what was possible on Broadway, he wondered if he’d ever get the chance to work with The Cabinet and SPOILER it’s happening!! In Marc’s first episode, we talk about his journey to Broadway and his experiences with High School Musical, If/Then, and Allegiance.

Mike Moise’s third episode covers a LOT of ground. In addition to lots more Hamilton goodness Mike talks about playing softball with the cast and crew of Hamilton in the Broadway Show League, why A Winter’s Ball into Helpless is one of the most satisfying (heyooo!) parts of the show to conduct, and we go INNNNNNNNN on Leonard Bernstein and West Side Story.

Mar 25, 2019
In Mike Moise’s second ep, we really get into the #TeamMusic of it all. From what he does for his pre-Hamilton piano warmup, to diving into the amazingness of What’d I Miss and The Room Where It Happens, to how he taught himself to play Ableton tracks and saving the show by playing them during a performance, Mike has stories for days! Not to mention the story about Chris Jackson that starts at a Marshalls and ends on the golf course.
Mar 18, 2019

Mike Moise, Hamilton’s Assistant Conductor, is super fun and full of energy. He started his music career at four years old by plunking out Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera BY EAR and by the end of his first episode Mike tells us the story of playing Andy Blankenbuehler’s Cats for ALW himself. But before that, Mike tells the story of how he had lived in NYC for less than a week before Sir Alex Lacamoire called him in to audition for Hamilton.

Mar 4, 2019

Scott Wasserman, Hamilton's Ableton Programmer, is back this week and on this episode we REALLY dive into how Ableton is used in the show. Scott breaks down how Ableton is used in Ten Duel Commandments, the rewind in Satisfied, The Reynolds Pamphlet, and more! We also talk about musical gems in Wait For It, Non-Stop, and Blow Us All Away.

Feb 25, 2019

Scott Wasserman is Hamilton's Ableton Programmer, and one of the nicest and most fun people around. Scott has been with Hamilton since the beginning and in this first episode he talks about how he helped create the sounds and effects not played by the (incredibly talented) orchestra. We talk the Vassar workshop, where you can (and can't!) still hear the original Broadway cast in current tour productions, and Lin-Manuel Miranda's amazing #HamiltonPR sitzprobe thread.

Euan Morton (KGIII in Hamilton Broadway) is back again this week! We talk Taboo, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Doctor Who, and tons of Hamilton stories including forgetting King George III's crown (twice!) and how Euan will occasionally fangirl over his fellow castmates at the stage door.

Greetings from Puerto Rico! Part Two! Well, not really, but Mike and I went to PR to see Hamilton and we had so much to say that I had to split our recording into two episodes. We tell you about our full #HamiltonPR experience from meeting listeners, to hanging with Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast backstage, and of course diving into the performance itself. We also tell you about the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, and the many reasons you should visit!

The theme of Kurt Crowley's third episode (and all of his episodes, really) is "beautifully nerdy." We talk Kurt's impeccable mashups, conducting big moments in the show (the big WAITs in "Wait For It" and that final moment with Eliza), and Kurt gives advice for anyone who wants to be a Broadway musician.

Jan 14, 2019

Kurt Crowley is back for round two and this week we're talking about how Hamilton has its very own Department of the Treasury (aka the music department) and how they are - still! - constantly making sure the music is on the up and up. Kurt also gives insight into the rehearsal process now that HamFans are being cast in the show and they have to unlearn the album, which is a lot harder than you may think. AND! Kurt goes in on the "Toronto/Company Screams in Chaos" part of "The Room Where it Happens" to make sure we know *exactly* when to chime in with our approved location.

Jan 7, 2019

Kurt Crowley, Hamilton Broadway's music director, kicks of 2019 with three mindblowing episodes. In this first episode Kurt pulls back the curtain on the #SNOB tradition (Saturday Night on Broadway), tells stories from the earliest days of Hamilton, goes in on his friendship/working relationship with Alex Lacamoire, and plays tons of motifs and musical gems because OF COURSE I MADE SURE THE KEYBOARD WAS PRESENT!
